The latest 'Freshness' update by Google has had a focus on fresher content. Last years Caffeine update gave Google the ability to crawl the web much faster, and now have the ability to index and display fresher results. Search Engine Land have said that this will affect 35% of searches.
The importance of updating your site regularly is nothing new, this has been an important factor in SEO and improving search engine rankings for a very long time, however now the importance has increased even more so. So make sure you're updating your site regularly, as well as having a social media strategy that involves constant updates which ties back to your website.
Doing some comparison work of different sites we're not really sure Google has gotten this completely right, but as with many of Google's algorithm updates, they tend to need to tweak their major updates after they release them.
